Report: Memphis Depay rejects chance to join Tottenham after approach
Memphis Depay has rejected the chance to join Tottenham Hotspur in the last few days, though a move to North London is not entirely out of the question, according to a report from Spanish outlet Sport.
Depay looks destined to leave Barcelona this summer. He signed a two-year at Camp Nou when he arrived last summer. And he ended the campaign as their top goalscorer.
However, Barca have brought in Robert Lewandowski and Raphinha and also kept Ousmane Dembele. And with that, Depay has now accepted that he may need to leave or face barely playing for Xavi’s men.
Sport reports that Tottenham have spoken to Depay’s representatives about a possible move, with Barcelona looking for around £17 million for the Dutchman. But Depay has now decided in the last few days to reject the opportunity to join Antonio Conte’s side.
The door is not completely closed to Spurs. But Depay wants to join a club where he can play a key role and challenge for titles.
Depay rejects the chance to join Tottenham
Obviously, Tottenham fans may not overly happy about Depay rejecting Spurs, but not completely ruling a move out. It is not the best start if a club sign a player who did not originally want to join.
However, Antonio Conte does not need to sign Depay to have a frightening amount of depth up front. So it is not the end of the world if Tottenham do not get a deal done.
If something opens up later in the window, that would be excellent. Depay is a ‘fantastic‘ player at the peak of his career.
But it is not a setback Tottenham will worry about for too long given the squad they have already put together.
