The Times have claimed that Matty Longstaff is finally set to put pen to paper and sign a new contract at Newcastle United after months of uncertainty surrounding his future – despite interest from Leeds United and Udinese.
Rotherham-born Longstaff, 20, had enjoyed a breakthrough season under Steve Bruce last season – clocking up 15 senior appearances and even scoring three goals. Two came in the Premier League, both against Manchester United.
Such a sparkling start saw his future plunge into doubt, as interest came in for the midfielder – and with his current contract having ran out at the end of the season. Leeds were keen, and Udinese had made an offer, as per the Times.
But the newest report now states that Longstaff has finally chosen to stay on Tyneside alongside brother Sean. A breakthrough in talks, have now seen Longstaff set to stay. Jeff Hendrick passed a medical on Monday.

TBR’s view – Staying at Newcastle was always Longstaff’s best move
Even though a move to Udinese would have been glamorous, the chances are Longstaff would have ended up on loan at Championship side Watford – given the two clubs are run by Father and Son.
Leeds would have been an intriguing move but the chances that Longstaff would have started under Marcelo Bielsa remain to be seen. Staying at Newcastle, continuing his progress in familiar surroundings, was a no brainer.
