Matt Ritchie might seek a move down south if he parts ways with Newcastle United, according to The Daily Mail.
Ritchie has announced his decision to stop playing for Scotland because of family reasons. With his family living in Hampshire, he uses the international break to spend time on the south coast.
This could also be a factor that comes into play when discussing his long-term future. The versatile Newcastle ace had been in discussions over a new contract extension at St James’ Park.
However, these negotiations have come to a halt after he picked up an injury against Leicester City. His future looks unclear as he enters the final year-and-a-half of his contract. This could lead to an exit in January or next summer.
Despite being a popular figure in the dressing room and a fan favourite, Ritchie might move down south. This would allow the 30-year-old to spend more time with his family.
This is a similar situation to the one with Isaac Hayden over the past year. Newcastle have broken through this and perhaps they could do the same with Ritchie.
Despite his recent injury, he is still a useful squad member for Steve Bruce given his experience, versatility and work ethic. It would be a shame to lose Ritchie but he might need to make a sensible decision for his family.
