Report: Martinelli and Balogun could hamper Arsenal potential transfer for a striker
Gabriel Martinelli and Folarin Balogun could prove obstacles for Arsenal in their transfer chase for a new number nine.
According to The Athletic, the Gunners’ could target a move for a new striker should Alexandre Lacazette and Eddie Nketiah leave this summer.
However, the two youngsters complicate matters given their developments and a new deal.
Martinelli has proved a sensation since his transfer from Itauno back in 2019. The Brazilian scored 10 goals and assisting four times in 26 games across all competitions.
Meanwhile, Balogun has only recently signed a new long-term deal to remain at the Emirates Stadium. He was due to leave north London upon the expiration of his old contract, however, signed a new four-year deal.
Lacazette and Nketiah have experienced differing seasons. The Frenchman finished the side’s top scorer, whilst the Englishman has rarely started.
TBR View: Balogun and Martinelli shouldn’t hamper chase of crucial target
After what was a staggering season for the Gunners, the recent reports prove incredibly worrying.
A new number nine needs to be one of the most sought after targets this summer.
Lacazette has scored 19 goals across all competitions this campaign. His lack of consistency in front of goal was worrying with Arsenal stumbled to an eighth place finished.
Meanwhile, Nketiah wasn’t seen as a suitable back-up to the forward in a worrying move from Mikel Arteta.
Even Marinelli wasn’t seen as good enough to replace the 30-year-old amid his under-performances.
The need for a new number nine is crucial.
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has dropped off in form and has been used in the left-wing position. And after Lacazette and Nketiah, the two youngsters aren’t seen as good enough.
The club needs to find a middle ground that sees them target a centre-forward in the transfer market and help Martinelli and Balogun develop.
