Leeds United manager Marcelo Bielsa has reportedly requested for the Whites to sign Stuttgart forward Nicolas Gonzalez, according to Italian outlet Tuttomercatoweb.
The Elland Road side is back in the Premier League after 16 long years out, and as such, a good transfer window will help Bielsa’s side hit the ground running in the top flight.
Gonzalez has been in great form over the past 12 months, helping Stuttgart gain promotion back to the Bundesliga thanks to 14 goals and three assists in 27 second-tier games.
The 22-year-old’s heroics haven’t gone unnoticed, with Leeds initially reported to have been in pursuit along with six Serie A clubs including the Milan sides and the Rome rivals (Transfermarkt).
Now, according to Tuttomercatoweb, the Whites are hoping to beat AC Milan, Napoli and Atalanta to Gonzalez’s signature.
In addition, it has been reported that Bielsa himself, as opposed to Victor Orta, has “specifically requested” to sign the 5ft 11in forward, who is said to have an £18million release clause.
Gonzalez has shown over the past 12 months that he’s a cut above, with a number of strings on his bow including great movement, pace, accelleration and an eye for goal all helping him get his club back into the German top flight.
Signing him would be a tall order, given just how many sides are reported to be after his services, but could the lure of playing in the Premier League under one of the best coaches in world football – a fellow Argentine too – prove tempting?
