Report: Manchester United want £15m for Tottenham-linked Nemanja Matic

The Sun have claimed that Manchester United want £15million for Nemanja Matic in the January transfer window, after the Serbian midfielder was linked with Tottenham Hotspur following Spurs’ appointment of Jose Mourinho.

Matic, 31, has only managed two Premier League appearances all season. Indeed, he has dropped down the pecking order but has also missed the last 10 league and cup outings due to injury. His contract ends at the end of the season.

United will be looking to sell Matic in the January window, given that the former Chelsea and Benfica star can leave on a free transfer in the summer. Ed Woodward is looking to recoup £15million, for a player he spent £40million on in 2017.

The Independent claim Tottenham are considering a move for the midfielder, after Mourinho worked with Matic at both Chelsea and United. It remains to be seen if Daniel Levy would sanction a move, given Matic’s age and wage demands.

The Sun’s report, though, claims Inter Milan are in talks to sign Matic with Antonio Conte also keen on a reunion.

TBR’s view – Should Tottenham really sign Matic?

It would be a waste of money – even if Matic returns from his injury and rediscovers the form which saw him shine during his early days at Old Trafford. That is because Spurs are well-stocked in Matic’s position.

Eric Dier looks as though he is to make a return from the wilderness under Mourinho, while Harry Winks’ rise continues to push the Spurs anchor towards England’s Euro 2020 squad. Tanguy Ndombele, Moussa Sissoko and Victor Wanyama are options.

Splashing £15million on a player well into his thirties and on a big wage would be a waste.
