According to a report by The Daily Star, a swap deal between Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur could take place. This would see Toby Alderweireld move to Old Trafford with Eric Bailly heading in the other direction.
Spurs have tried to keep Alderweireld in North London. But he has a £25m release clause and has failed to agree to fresh terms and a new contract at the moment.
Manchester United are desperate to bolster their defensive options this summer. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has identified centre-back as one of the club’s problem positions.
Alderweireld is a top target and at £25m, he is seen as a bargain. But Solskjaer could use Bailly as a bargaining tool as he attempts to sign the Belgian.
Bailly has been in and out of the Man United team since his arrival from Villarreal in 2016. Both Jose Mourinho and Solskjaer have used him sparingly.
The Ivory Coast defender has struggled with injuries and form at Man United. And Solskjaer has reportedly told him that he can leave.
Mauricio Pochettino is a fan of Bailly, who is also wanted by Arsenal, and could offer him the chance to play for Spurs. With Alderweireld leaving, a swap deal involving a potential replacement could be a good option for Tottenham.
But Pochettino and Spurs will be hoping that Bailly can recapture his form and fitness if he joins. This is the risk that comes with his arrival.
