Perhaps one of the more controversial transfer rumours of the day, as per The Guardian, England winger Raheem Sterling is open to the possibility of leaving Liverpool for Manchester United.
Reports suggest that the 20-year-old, who has turned down a £100,000 a week contract offer from the Anfield outfit, is aware of the Red Devils’ interest and would be keen to explore joining and working under Dutch manager Louis van Gaal.
Interestingly, though, the youngster he is said to be concerned how the transfer would be received given the fierce rivalry between the clubs. This is understandable, as selling one of their key players to their greatest rival would be ill-received by club supporters.
Sterling struggled to build on his breakthrough season at Anfield, despite scoring seven goals and contributing with a further seven assists. As Brendan Rodgers side struggled in their attempts to qualify for the Champions League, the youngster – operating under the burden of key player status – largely failed to live up to expectations.
There is no doubt that he possesses fantastic potential, however, United fans would undoubtedly hope to see a greater return in the final third. Should he and Memphis Depay strike up an effective wingman-ship, we could see a quick return to the Manchester United glory days. An injection of pace down the flanks would not go amiss.
However, the Liverpool Echo suggests the Anfield outfit have no intention of doing business with their north-west rivals, while Sky Sports have been quick to quash such rumours.
Is this speculation likely to amount to anything? Probably not. However, it will be intriguing to sit back and watch as the Liverpool-Sterling saga continues to unfold.
