The Shields Gazette have claimed that Manchester United have had a £35million bid rejected for Newcastle United wonderkid Sean Longstaff, ahead of Thursday’s 5pm deadline.
The 21-year-old broke into the Newcastle side towards the back end of the 2018-19 campaign. Rafa Benitez blooded the midfielder into Newcastle’s first team, and he clocked up 13 appearances – scoring two goals.
It saw Longstaff earn enormous praise for man-of-the-match displays in the Premier League. His impressive Premier League form came after starring for Blackpool on loan in 2017-18, and being a regular feature in the Under-23 side.
With excellent form comes heavy interest, and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s are certainly keen to land Longstaff. United lost both Marouane Fellaini and Ander Herrera earlier this summer, while Paul Pogba’s future remains in doubt.
Longstaff has a contract at Newcastle until the summer of 2022, and with just four hours until the end of the window, a move for Manchester United to land Longstaff for big money is unlikely.
The report claims that Newcastle have told Manchester United in no uncertain terms that Longstaff is not for sale, rejecting the eight-figure offer. It is also believed that United are unlikely to return before Thursday’s 5pm deadline.
Newcastle currently have depth in midfield, with Isaac Hayden, Jonjo Shelvey, Ki Sung-yueng and Longstaff as options. Jack Colback is expected to leave the club, with a return to Nottingham Forest on the cards.
