According to a report from The Sun, Manchester City do not plan to stand in Mikel Arteta’s way should Arsenal come calling with the opportunity to succeed Unai Emery.
Emery looks to be coming under increasing pressure at the Emirates. Arsenal have not won any of their last five games, and have not registered a win in the Premier League for more than a month.
The Sun reports that Arteta is one of the names that the Gunners are interested in. And the Spaniard – who turned down Newcastle United in the summer – is keen to take the job at the Emirates.
And it appears that Arsenal have received a further boost. The Sun suggests that the Cityzens are willing to let Arteta return to North London if the Gunners do make an approach.
It does appear that Emery may be leaving himself with too much work to do. A large section of the supporters appear to already be convinced that a change is required.
Arsenal have a fantastic run of games coming up in the league. Their next four opponents all sit in the bottom-half of the table. And their next two come against the sides propping up the division.
Should their run without a win continue much longer, a change will surely be made. And given the supporters’ discontent, Arteta may be coming in at a fantastic time.
It would be a gamble to appoint their former midfielder. But he has had a fantastic education. And with Emery struggling, the fans will probably be willing to give Arteta plenty of breathing space in the early stages if he does take over.
