Report: Manchester City want Pau Torres; Tottenham pushed for him this summer
Manchester City are now in the hunt for Villarreal defender Pau Torres, with reports from Spain suggesting Pep Guardiola is keen on the Spanish defensive star.
Marca claim that City are now firmly in the mix to sign Torres, who was heavily courted by Tottenham during the summer window. In fact, it was just this week that Torres spoke about a potential £52m move to Spurs and why it didn’t happen.
The Spanish international is widely regarded as one of the best young centre-backs in Europe. He helped Villarreal to Europa League success last term, and his reputation has continued to blossom.
Tottenham were desperate to sign him. Fabio Paratici made countless moves, culminating in a bid in excess of £50m. But the defender stayed put, and it is now Manchester City who are pressing ahead.
Marca’s report claims that Txiki Beguiristain has been checking in on Torres for some time now.
TBR’s View: Do Manchester City really need Pau Torres?
It’s certainly something worth asking. They already have Stones, Dias, Laporte, and Nathan Ake as central defenders. Surely, then Torres is not a desperate need right now?
Of course, Guardiola might fancy changing things. Laporte’s future has been in doubt for some time. Ake, meanwhile, hasn’t quite kicked on since his big money move to the club.
Stones and Dias are the number one pairing at City. There is no doubt about that at the moment. For Torres, he’d need to weight up whether he thinks he can breach that pairing and stake his claim.
