Bleacher Report have claimed that Manchester City are considering a move to bring Aston Villa midfielder Douglas Luiz back to the Etihad just one season after the Midlands side bought the Brazilian.
Luiz, 22, failed to make a single appearance for City since he was signed from Brazilian outfit Vasco Da Gama – instead going on loan to Spanish outfit Girona. He then earned a £15million (BBC) move to Villa last summer.
He has since clocked up 39 appearances for Villa in all competitions this season, renowned for his array of passing but also his ability to score from long range. He has scored three this term, two from outside the 18-yard box.
The report states that while City have been scouting Atalanta’s former Middlesbrough midfielder Marten de Roon, they have also received glowing reports about Luiz – with Pep Guardiola open to the return of the Brazilian ace.
TBR’s view – Villa have no chance of blocking move if they go down
Like with many of their players, the club will have to sell to stay afloat after spending big last summer. Jack Grealish, Tyrone Mings, John McGinn and even Luiz could leave the club to remain in the Premier League.
Luiz has become one of the better players in the relegation dogfight, impressing since the return. If Villa stay up, you would like to think he would remain at Villa Park to further his development and continue getting game time.
But to return to City and be a squad player is likely to be tempting, especially with City’s European ban scrapped.
