Italian website CalcioMercato have claimed that Manchester City will ‘listen to offers’ for defender Aymeric Laporte this summer, as the Frenchman has dropped down the pecking order behind the likes of John Stones and Ruben Dias.
A mainstay in the side since joining the club in January 2018, 26-year-old Laporte suffered a knee injury last season and the rejuvenated Stones has now kicked him out of the team. Summer signing Dias has been one of the players of the 20-21 season.
Pep Guardiola has used a rotation system with his centre-backs this season, but the first-choice partnership is Stones and Dias. It has seen France international Laporte start just 20 games in all competitions – only 13 in the Premier League.
With Nathan Ake only joining last summer and Eric Garcia also on the books – though expected to leave – it is claimed that £120,000-a-week (Spotrac) Laporte could also be on the firing list. CalcioMercato say City will ‘listen to offers’.
TBR’s view – Where could Laporte go?
Realistically, Manchester City are not going to sell him to a direct Premier League title rival – so that excludes the chance of a move to Liverpool, Manchester United, Leicester City or Chelsea. The likes of Tottenham and Arsenal might have a chance.
But more likely is a return to Spain, or a move to his home country of France. Paris Saint-Germain would certainly like to sign Laporte, while Barcelona wanted Laporte before he went to Manchester City. Many clubs will be in for Laporte, if he can go.
