Report: Manchester City now want to sign 24-year-old, just weeks after Newcastle made £21m bid for him

Manchester City are interested in Atletico Madrid defender Renan Lodi, just weeks after Newcastle United bid for the left-back.

According to The Telegraph, Man City have drawn up a list of potential targets to provide some much-needed back-up to Joao Cancelo.

Newcastle were previously credited with interest in Lodi at the start of the transfer window, and reportedly made a £21m bid for the left-back.

However, the move never materialised, and Matt Targett’s loan move from Aston Villa was made permanent.

The English full-back started Newcastle’s opening game against Nottingham Forest and kept a clean sheet as Eddie Howe’s side started the season with a win.

It’s a credit to Newcastle’s ambition this summer that they’ve not only been linked to the same player as Premier League champions Man City, but identified the 24-year-old as a potential target first.

While the deal between Lodi and Howe’s side hasn’t happened yet, Newcastle are still keen to add to their ranks before the transfer window closes.

The latest reports suggest Newcastle could try to hijack West Ham’s move for exciting Croatian defender Borna Sosa.

The Stuttgart defender is also 24 and is one of the most effective attacking full-backs in Europe.

He’s delivered 19 assists in his 66 Bundesliga appearances so far, and earned six caps for Croatia as a result.

It remains to be seen whether Newcastle will go back in for Lodi, but they may struggle to convince the Brazilian to join them over the English champions.
