TodoFichajes have claimed that Manchester City, Everton and Newcastle United are all interested in raiding Arsenal for versatile star Ainsley Maitland-Niles this summer, with Mikel Arteta keen to wave goodbye.
Maitland-Niles, 22, has been in and out of the Arsenal side this season – remaining a key part of the team under Unai Emery but struggling to gain his place in the team under Arteta. Of his 23 appearances, only eight have come under Arteta.
Indeed, the England Under-21 international has been used as a late sub in three of those eight matches. It is clear that Arteta does not see the versatile ace as a starting option, and that may convince Maitland-Niles to depart this summer.
The latest report claims Maitland-Niles “will leave Arsenal this summer” and that Manchester City, Everton and Newcastle are all interested in nabbing his signature. He has a contract at Arsenal until the summer of 2023.
TBR’s view – Should Arsenal get rid of Maitland-Niles?
Emery was backed into a corner in terms of playing Maitland-Niles at right-back. With Hector Bellerin and Calum Chambers injured, he has no choice but to use Maitland-Niles on the right side of the defence.
A number of mistakes followed and it was clear to see that Maitland-Niles is simply not a right-back – hence the decision to sign Cedric Soares in January, even with Bellerin returning from injury.
Naturally a central midfielder, Arsenal boast Matteo Guendouzi, Granit Xhaka, Lucas Torreira and Dani Ceballos and could add the likes of Thomas Partey this summer. Maitland-Niles is some way off that list – so surely he is surplus to requirements.
