Brazilian website Globo Esporte have claimed that Manchester City are ‘moving’ to exercise the £25million buyback clause in Aston Villa midfielder Douglas Luiz’s contract – just one season after he swapped City for Villa.
Last summer, 22-year-old Luiz chose to leave Manchester City after two seasons at Spanish side Girona on loan – moving to Villa for a fee in the region of £15million. He has since gone from strength to strength at Villa Park.
Luiz played 42 times for Villa in all competitions last season, while also earning his first cap for Brazil. Manchester City are said to have included a £25million clause in his contract, in case they wanted the Brazilian back.
Now, the latest report from Luiz’s home country claim that City are looking to exercise that clause in order to bring the midfielder back to the Etihad. He could be a long-term replacement for Fernandinho.
TBR’s view – Just what Manchester City need
City’s disappointing 2019-20 campaign is proof they need additions in numerous positions. A new centre-back, perhaps a left-back and signings in midfield to finally replace Fernandinho are crucial.
The latter could be the reason why Luiz is being targeted for a return to City. Ilkay Gundogan has replaced Fernandinho at times this season but the German is too attacking for the role. Luiz is perfect.
