Report: Manchester City keeping tabs on Arsenal man
Manchester City have been keeping tabs on the progress of Mikel Arteta since his move to Arsenal as they consider potential replacements for Pep Guardiola, according to a report from The Athletic.
Replacing Guardiola is going to be a huge moment for City. Of course, he has helped take the side to another level. And it is difficult to imagine where the club go when the Catalonian decides to move on.
The Athletic reports that his contract expires in 2023. And it is noted that that is also when Arteta’s current terms at the Emirates come to an end.
Clearly, City are going to keep their options open. Surely, they would love nothing more than for Guardiola to extend his stay at the Etihad Stadium.
However, they are keeping their eye on other names who could come in when Guardiola does go. And two of the Premier League bosses on their radar are Arteta and Patrick Vieira, according to a report from The Athletic.
Mikel Arteta being in frame for future Manchester City chance highlights how impressive Arsenal turnaround has been
Obviously, the links may not come as a huge surprise. Both have connections to City, with Arteta working with Guardiola before taking the Arsenal job.
But it does perhaps help show just how far Arteta has come at Arsenal. He started brilliantly, winning the FA Cup during his first season. But last term proved to be a long one.
And the early stages of this campaign led to further discontent about Arteta’s position. However, Arsenal are now flying. And with the squad that the Spaniard has built, it does appear that the Gunners have the foundations in place to really kick on.
Guardiola insisted that Arsenal were the better side following City’s narrow win at the weekend. And the City boss was one backing Arteta to come good after their previous meeting, claiming that he was ‘above and beyond’ a good manager. He also noted that he is a big fan.
Much will surely depend on where Arsenal are when Guardiola steps aside. But it does say a lot that Arteta is in the conversation.
