Report: Manchester City join Liverpool and United in race for Nuno Mendes

Manchester City could look to beat both Liverpool and Manchester United in the race to sign Sporting Lisbon starlet, Nuno Mendes.

The Daily Mail claims City have now thrown their name in the hat when it comes to the chase for Mendes, who is widely regarded as one of the top young talents in Europe.

Liverpool have long been admirers of Mendes. United, too, are also said to have shown interest in the player, who is said to have a release clause of £63m in his contract.

Further, A’Bola have also claimed AC Milan are keeping tabs on Mendes. It means, then, that any transfer for Mendes is not going to be straight forward, given the amount of interest in him.

But City, who still have spending power most can only dream of, may be confident of a deal. Mendes, who predominantly plays as an attacking left-back, could well be the ideal replacement for Benjamin Mendy. The Frenchman has dipped well off the boil in recent times, losing his place to Oleksandr Zinchenko.

Mendes has made 25 appearances across all competitions this season and at just 18, is expected to on and improve further in the coming seasons.

TBR View: Mendes looks brilliant, City should be all over it

If Guardiola wants to keep seeing this City side improve and grow, then players like Mendes are who he needs to be looking at.

It’s reassuring for City fans that they are interested. They should be all over the very top talent in Europe and Mendes is certainly in that bracket.

£63m might seem a lot, but if you take into account the money City have spent in recent seasons, then for an 18-year-old with seemingly unlimited potential, it doesn’t seem so bad.
