Report: Manchester City hopeful Arsenal target will extend contract

Manchester City remain hopeful that Raheem Sterling will extend his contract at the club, according to The Sun – in news that may be of interest to Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta.

Sterling’s future has been widely discussed in recent weeks. As noted in the report, his deal at the Etihad Stadium expires at the end of next season.

It is claimed that the 26-year-old’s talks with the Premier League champions are currently on hold.

That may perhaps alert the Gunners. The Daily Star recently reported that Arteta had made the £300,000-a-week forward one of his top targets for next summer.

It was suggested that the Arsenal boss had an excellent relationship with the England international.

However, The Sun reports that City remain hopeful that Sterling will indeed decide to extend his contract with them.

Arsenal signing Sterling always seemed a long-shot anyway as City remain hopeful of new contract

It is difficult to rule anything out in the transfer market. So perhaps it would be naive to suggest that the Gunners could not yet sign Sterling.

But it did always appear hard to imagine.

Sterling is on huge money with City. And Arsenal have not always had the best luck when signing players to their most lucrative contracts.

City would also not allow him to leave on the cheap. He would still command a high price one year out from his contract’s expiration.

Arsenal appear to have enjoyed a lot of success from signing a number of younger players this past summer.

Sterling has achieved almost everything in the game. And he almost feels like a veteran despite his age.

So he would arguably not fit into that bracket of being a hungry player with a lot of room for improvement.

Obviously, he would not be a bad signing. He is a world-class forward. But it was always hard to imagine him ending up at the Emirates.
