Report: Manchester City titan ‘putting pressure’ on board to leave; wants to join third-place club
Aymeric Laporte is reportedly putting pressure on the Manchester City board to sanction a transfer to FC Barcelona.
According to Sport, the Spanish international is keen to move to the La Liga giants, who finished third last season. Laporte is eager to play first-team football with the defender losing his spot to John Stones and Ruben Dias.
Although the centre-back played well over 2,000 minutes for Pep Guardiola’s side in all competitions, Laporte is keen on a move to Barcelona. And as per the report, the defender is ‘putting pressure’ on the City board to allow a transfer to happen.
Barcelona have been busy this summer
The Catalonian club have been busy in the transfer window this summer. Barcelona have already confirmed the signing of Sergio Aguero and Eric Garcia from City. The duo left the Premier League champions following the expirations of their contract last month.
However, Barcelona appear to want a third signing from City this summer in the form of Laporte. The centre-back is an appealing option for the La Liga giants based off his experience in the division as well as his newly acquired Spanish citizenship.
Barcelona conceded the joint-most goals out of any of the La Liga top-five last season with 38 goals, 13 more than champions Atletico Madrid. And with Gerard Pique entering the twilight years of his career, Laporte could be an excellent addition this summer.
City will be taking a risk letting Laporte leave for Barcelona
Laporte can feel somewhat hard done it by over the past 12 months with City. The former Athletic Bilbao defender was regarded as the club’s best centre-back and one of the finest in the division. But then, Dias arrived.
The Portuguese international has been a revelation for City since his arrival last summer. And his partnership with Stones formed one of the club’s best centre-back pairings, leaving Laporte to watch from the bench.
Indeed, with Barcelona interested and Stones and Dias unlikely to be broken up next season, a return to La Liga could be on the cards for Laporte. But it would be a risky move for City, who might find themselves short at the back.
