According to Goal, Manchester City are said to be among a host of big European clubs tracking Canadian teenager Jahkeele Marshall-Rutty.
The winger has exploded onto the scene with Toronto FC after being handed his debut last season.
Naturally, he’s been compared to Bayern Munich superstar Alphonso Davies, who has impressed in the Bundesliga. Still just 16, Marshall-Rutty is said to be attracting the attention of City, Manchester United, Juventus, and interestingly, Bayern themselves.
Goal’s report, which is part of their NxTGen series, has quotes from Marshall-Rutty himself, who plays down the links with Davies.
However, there are some interesting comments from Canada coach John Herdman, who explained how one moment in training drew comparisons with Dutch legend, Marco Van Basten.
“A lot of footballers, they have very similar technical abilities,” Herdman told Goal.
“But the ability to do that in big moments under pressure, that’s what I’ve seen in the most recent camp. He scored a goal, and we were laughing because everyone was describing it as ‘a Van Basten’. He scores a volley after the ball dropped over his left shoulder in training, and this is a 16-year-old in that environment with a lot of senior players watching.”
TBR View: Another for Manchester City to be excited about?
City seem to be keeping an eye on their future at the moment it seems. The likes of Haaland and Reyna being linked suggests the club is looking to add youthful players to continue to build.
Obviously, it’s early days for Marshall-Rutty but the comparisons and comments from those in the know suggest he’s another top youngster emerging from North America.
City will fancy their chances here, given their resources, and the lure of working under Pep Guardiola.
