Report: Man Utd deal for Argentine winger a matter of hours away
According to the Metro, Manchester United are expected to announce the signing of Benfica winger Nicolas Gaitan “in the coming hours.”
The report suggests that the Benfica midfielder has agreed terms with Louis van Gaal’s side, with Nani, who has spent the season on loan at Sporting Lisbon, expected to be heading the other way.
At 27 years of age, Gaitan would become the Red Devils first signing of an important summer window. Louis van Gaal is expected to spend big within coming months as he looks to build on his maiden season at the Old Trafford helm.
The Argentine international made 26 league appearances for Benfica this term, scoring four goals in total, while he made a further five appearances in the Champions League.
Manchester United have lacked quality out wide for much of the season – with the exception of Ashley Young’s impressive form – and the versatile Gaitan, who can play on either flank or down the centre, will be a welcome addition to Van Gaal’s ranks.
A deal would bring an end to a long pursuit of the midfielder by the north-West club, following substantial interest from Sir Alex Ferguson during his lengthy tenure.
