Report: Man City ace Pep ‘is a big fan of’ close to new deal, he's only played 13 times for club
Manchester City keeper Zack Steffen is reportedly close to signing a new contract with the club.
According to the Daily Star, the American international, along with Phil Foden, is in talks with the Premier League champions on fresh terms with City.
Steffen joined the Manchester side in 2019, and since 2020 has acted as backup to Ederson Moraes. City also have veteran keeper Scott Carson on the books.
Indeed, the 26-year-old shot-stopper has only made 13 appearances for City since signing from the Columbus Crew. But as per the report, Guardiola ‘is a big fan’ of Steffen. And the club and expected to reach terms on a new four-year contract soon.
City have been working this summer to tie down key players to new long-term deals. With Steffen now set to be offered a new contract, the USMNT star will join the likes of Ruben Dias, John Stones and Ederson in committing their future to the club.
Steffen might only be a backup to City. But with Guardiola eager on handing the keeper a new contract with the club, it is an encouraging sign for the 26-year-old Pennsylvania-born ace.
The American proved solid competition for Ederson last season, with Steffen impressing in the FA Cup and League Cup. And this new contract will be key if City are to ward off potential suitors for the former Fortuna Dusseldorf loan star.
