A report by The Athletic has possibly handed Arsenal a boost in their quest to land Real Madrid midfielder Martin Odegaard.

The Norwegian spent last season on loan with the Gunners, making 20 appearances in the red and white of Arsenal.

It has been claimed that Mikel Arteta has identified Odegaard as his number one summer transfer target.

Now, there could be hope. The report claims that Carlo Ancelotti is aware that Los Blancos are willing to consider offers for the Norway captain.

At this stage, he has no desire to change that. He wants to keep Eden Hazard and Gareth Bale but could still let Odegaard leave.

That would be a welcome boost to Arteta. He would dearly love the playmaker back and rates him very highly.

The 22-year-old is valued at £35 million by Real Madrid. As a result, Arsenal may choose to take him on loan again and include a purchase option further down the line.

He earns £85,000-a-week at the Bernabeu and signing him certainly won’t come cheap.

Arsenal are desperate to bolster their ranks this summer. They finished eighth during 2020/21 and won’t be in Europe next season.

Arteta was so impressed last season that he heaped praise on him back in February.

He told Sky Sports that he was ‘incredible’ and that he was a ‘really intelligent player’ after a standout showing.

Arsenal must pull out the stops to land Odegaard

Fans might not want to hear it but landing the Real Madrid wonderkid would be a tremendous coup for the Gunners.

Okay, he wasn’t out of this world during his loan spell but joining halfway through a campaign is tricky.

When he signed for Real Sociedad ahead of the 2019/20 campaign, he really showcased his talents.

With a full pre-season under his belt he scored seven goals and claimed nine assists for the La Liga outfit.

Arsenal could benefit considerably from signing him during this summer and these latest reports could offer them a real chance to get their man.
