Aston Villa’s transfer hopes have been dealt a blow. According to The Sun, Manchester United plan to use Axel Tuanzebe next season and will offer him a new contract.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is desperate to bolster his defence this summer after Man United struggled to keep clean sheets last season.
Tuanzebe, who has spent the last season-and-a-half on loan at Aston Villa, could be the solution. Solskjaer will give him the chance to impress in pre-season and a new contract could be on the table.
The 21-year-old only has one year remaining on his current deal at Old Trafford. Aston Villa would have been eager to sign him permanently (or bring him back on loan) after some impressive performances.
Tuanzebe played a major role in Aston Villa’s promotion via the play-offs. Operating alongside Tyrone Mings, the young centre-back ensured the Villans returned to the Premier League.
But this caught the eye of Man United. Solskjaer wants Tuanzebe’s future sorted before coaching him to become a first-team player for the Red Devils.
This transfer plan could save Manchester United millions in the summer window. But it will be a blow for Dean Smith, who would have happily welcomed Tuanzebe back.
The England U21 was only on loan, as was Mings and Wolves defender Kortney Hause. If Smith cannot bring these players back, Aston Villa need a rethink in defence.
