The Daily Mail has claimed that Lyon midfielder Houssem Aouar has caught the attention of those at Arsenal and the young French star could become a summer target for the Gunners, as Mikel Arteta looks to beef up his options.
Aouar, 21, has starred for Lyon since breaking into the side as a teenager. So much so, that the central midfielder is a regular in France’s Under-21 side and has clocked up a total of 126 senior appearances for the Ligue 1 outfit.
Lyon’s number eight is a box-to-box midfielder – but can also play at the base of engine room, or in the 10 role. He has even been known to play on the left side of midfield, despite being right-footed.
Likened to Aaron Ramsey, as per the Mail, Aouar has the ability to score or create goals in the final third. In his 126 outings, he has scored 22 goals and laid on 23 assists – having a hand in a goal about every three games.
Now, The Gunners are keen to bring the Lyon star to north London, given Dani Ceballos is due to return to Real Madrid. That leaves Mikel Arteta with just Matteo Guendouzi, Granit Xhaka and Lucas Torreira.
TBR’s view – Aouar the type of midfielder Arsenal need
The aforementioned trio currently residing at Arsenal are all renowned for their abilities at the base of the midfield, but have little impact in the final third. In a combined 313 outings for Arsenal, Xhaka, Guendouzi and Torreira have scored 16 goals.
Arteta needs a midfielder who can break into the final third from deep and clock up 10 goals a season – much like Ramsey did before he moved to Juventus. Italian outlet CalcioMercato claim Lyon value Aouar at £52million.
Though expensive, he would be the answer to Arsenal’s lack of creativity from deep.
