Report: Luis Campos rejects ‘astronomical’ Newcastle move

French newspaper L’Equipe have claimed – as per GFFN – that Newcastle United have seen an ‘astronomical’ bid for Lille sporting director Luis Campos rejected by the man himself.

Campos, 55, has been strongly linked with a move to the Premier League. Indeed, Tottenham are said to be interested in the Portuguese supremo, with Jose Mourinho close with his fellow countryman – and Spurs raiding Lille for many of their staff.

However, the latest report claims that with Campos’ future in the balance, Newcastle’s soon-to-be owners have made a huge offer for Campos to move to Tyneside and be the brains behind the club’s project in the transfer market.

But it appears that even though Campos’ future at Lille is in doubt, he has rejected a move to St. James’ Park. The report states that although Campos could make suggestions through his scouting company, he has no intention of leaving Lille.

Earlier this season, The Guardian claimed Mourinho was hopeful of luring Campos to north London. Whether a move to the Premier League materialises this summer, remains to be seen.

TBR’s view – Campos would be perfect for Newcastle

There is little doubt among supporters that when a takeover does get announced, that a sporting director will be appointed to orchestrate transfers above Steve Bruce’s head – or another manager, for that matter.

In the world of sporting directors, little are better renowned than Campos. His work in the transfer market has been a key ingredient to Lille qualifying for the Champions League last season.

A move to Newcastle would see them perhaps finally complete a move for Boubakary Soumare after coming close last summer, while striker Victor Osimhen is also likely to be on his way to the Premier League. Whether or not he leaves Lille, though, is up in the air.
