Italian newspaper Gazzetta Dello Sport have claimed that Luciano Spalletti is keen to try his luck in the Premier League amid reports that Newcastle United are interested – but he must strike an agreement with Inter Milan.
Spalletti was replaced by Antonio Conte last summer at Inter Milan, but like Mauricio Pochettino at Tottenham, he has remained on their pay roll. Indeed, his contract at Inter expired in 2021, meaning he continues to be paid by the Italian club.
However, that continued payment expires when he gets a new job – and Spalletti is now keen to sit down with Inter chief execeutive Giuseppe Marotta in order to come to an agreement, which could be a boost for Newcastle.
CalcioMercato now states that former Roma, Inter Milan and Zenit St. Petersburg manager Spalletti is a target for the Toon’s potential new owners – with an announcement said to occur this week. Now, he could be available, and wants an English job.
TBR’s view – Should Newcastle consider Spalletti?
Spalletti, 61, has enormous experience but has only ventured out of Italy on one occasion, managing Zenit St. Petersburg where he won four trophies – including two Russian Premier League titles.
However, the Premier League is a different animal and that lack of experience in England’s top tier should push Spalletti down the shortlist somewhat. Rafa Benitez and Mauricio Pochettino are certainly Newcastle’s best options right now.
