Football London have claimed that long-term Arsenal absentee Pablo Mari could be included in Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal squad for the first time this season, as the Gunners travel to Norway to take on Molde in the Europa League.
Mari, 27, has failed to add to his three Arsenal appearances this season after suffering a long-term ankle injury in the first game back after lockdown – a 3-0 defeat to Manchester City which saw David Luiz sent off at the Etihad.
Since then, the Spanish defender has been undergoing intense rehabilitation and in the last couple of weeks, he has returned to training – initially under a running and strengthening programme and light ball work.
The latest report claims Arsenal had set themselves the aim of reintegrating Mari with the squad after the November international break. However, the game against Leeds came too early – but he could be in the squad to play against Molde.
TBR’s view – Mari return a huge defensive boost for Arsenal
Though he has only played three times, he has shown glimpses of proper quality – enough to convince Arsenal to spend the £14million (Mail) required to bring him to the Emirates on a permanent basis from Brazilian outfit Flamengo.
The Gunners need to look forward. Shkodran Mustafi, Sokratis and David Luiz are all out of contract next summer and Mari, Gabriel, Rob Holding and William Saliba are the future. Bringing him in at the earliest possible opportunity is key.
