Liverpool’s discussions with Barcelona over a potential move for Georginio Wijnaldum have stalled, with Sport reporting that the Reds’ asking price is too high for Barca.

Wijnaldum has been heavily linked with a potential move to the Nou Camp for much of the window. As noted by Sport, he is now in the final year of his contract at Anfield, and it is suggested that he is keen to move to the Catalan club and work under Ronald Koeman.

However, talks have apparently stalled.

According to Sport, Liverpool want around £15.5 million for the 29-year-old. However, Barcelona do not want to pay that amount due to his age and contract situation.

The report adds that Wijnaldum wants clarity on his future before the Reds begin their Premier League title defence this weekend.

TBR View: Liverpool right to not back down

The Independent has suggested that Liverpool are open to keeping Wijnaldum for the final year of his contract. And thus, it would be a surprise if they are willing to lower their asking price by much.

Wijnaldum missed one Premier League game last season. And while the situation is not ideal, Jurgen Klopp will surely want to put plenty of faith in him once again this time around.

Perhaps it should not be a surprise if an agreement is ultimately reached – particularly with Wijnaldum reportedly keen to go.

But Liverpool are right to dig their heels in.
