Report: Liverpool wanted Ismaila Sarr before signing Diogo Jota

Liverpool identified Ismaila Sarr as their number one attacking target but switched gears once they realised they could get Diogo Jota at a cheaper price, according to the Daily Mail.

The Watford winger was valued at £50 million by the Championship club and because of that, he didn’t get a move during the summer transfer window.

Liverpool parted with £45 million for Jota from Wolves and he has proved quite the signing for the Reds.

The forward has been a revelation since checking in, capping a fine start to life at Anfield with a hat-trick against Atalanta earlier this week.

He now has seven goals during his first 10 games for his new club and Liverpool fans love him.

Sarr would perhaps have also been a decent signing, although Liverpool are being proved right to sign Jota.

The Senegalese star has scored twice and claimed two assists for Watford in the Championship after a slow start to the campaign.

Paying £50 million for a player with just one Premier League campaign under his belt might have proved a risk for Liverpool.

Last season he fired in six goals and claimed as many assists, failing to help Watford avoid the drop into the second tier.

Sarr is going to need to pick up his performance levels if the Hornets are to retain their valuation going into the January transfer window.

TBR View – Liverpool look to have struck gold again

Nobody will ever know whether Sarr would have had the same sort of impact that Jota has.

It does seem unlikely though. For starters, Sarr isn’t as versatile as the Portuguese performer and plays out wide more often than not.

Jota is capable of playing in any forward role and is already thriving under the influence of Jurgen Klopp.

Liverpool don’t get much wrong in the transfer market and in Jota they look to have struck gold once more.
