Report: Liverpool wanted £40m Houssem Aouar this summer but deal on ‘backburner’

Liverpool will reportedly not be doing any transfer business this summer, which means no deal for German international Timo Werner.

That is according to a report from The Mirror. They suggest that the financial implications of the global health crisis has seen Liverpool decide to hold off on Werner, as his £50 million asking price is too high. They will keep tabs on the situation and reportedly consider a move next summer.

However, it is not only Werner that Liverpool will no longer be going after.

The Reds have been linked with a host of names in recent weeks, with Werner always standing out as the only target Liverpool genuinely appeared keen on.

But it seems Houssem Aouar was also set to be the target of a Liverpool approach. The Mirror suggests that the skilled Frenchman was a summer target for Liverpool and that the club would have made a move for the player. Lyon value the 21-year-old midfield maestro at £40 million and, again, under the current situation, Liverpool will not be able to make a deal happen.

Indeed, the Liverpool ECHO did report that Aouar had been mentioned as a potential target for Liverpool this summer. The Daily Mail suggests that Liverpool nearly secured him as a teenager, so it is clear that the midfielder has been on the Anfield radar for some time.

However,  as the report suggests Aouar will now be ‘placed on the back-burner’ and Liverpool fans will hope that the club might get a second chance to bring the midfielder in.
