Report: Liverpool want Douglas Luiz; he's their top midfield target
Liverpool want Douglas Luiz as they look to strengthen further in midfield, with the Aston Villa star named their top target in the middle of the park, according to a report from Calciomercato.
It appears to have been a real mistake from the Reds hierarchy to not sign another midfielder until the final day of the summer transfer window.
Liverpool signed Arthur Melo on loan from Juventus. The deal was something of a surprise. And it does seem that the 26-year-old is going to need some time to get up to speed at Anfield.
Certainly, it is a situation that Liverpool will need to address further down the line. And it seems that one player on their radar is Luiz.
Aston Villa faced a fight to keep the Brazilian at Villa Park beyond the summer window. Reports claimed that Arsenal made a £20 million bid on the final day. However, the Villans were holding out for double that amount.
Villa will not be able to demand a similar fee in the future – unless he signs a new deal. His current contract expires next summer.
What will not help Steven Gerrard is interest from Liverpool.
Calciomercato reports that the Reds have made Luiz their top midfield target. There is also interest from a host of Italian clubs. Roma, AC Milan and Juventus all want the 24-year-old.
Liverpool want Douglas Luiz
Luiz has had a mixed time at Villa. At his best, he has been absolutely outstanding. He has previously been labelled ‘unbelievable‘.
But his form has also been mixed at times. So he is not the finished article.
However, his contract situation opens the door for a potential bargain. And he should only improve as he gains more and more experience.
