Dayot Upamecano is Liverpool’s primary transfer target to replace the injured Virgil van Dijk, according to Sunday World.
The RB Leipzig centre-back is set to be a wanted man due to some fine performances for the Bundesliga outfit in recent seasons.
Van Dijk will be missing for Liverpool for a considerable amount of time and reinforcements will be identified in January.
It’s claimed that Leipzig are expecting Liverpool to pounce for the 21-year-old in January, with a bid of £40 million likely to be tough to turn down for the German outfit.
Upamecano did recently pen a new contract with Leipzig, extending his stay until 2023.
Liverpool have Joe Gomez and Joel Matip as natural options in the absence of their influential Dutchman, whilst Fabinho has also stepped into the breach with aplomb.
If the Reds are serious about challenging for the title and competing in the Champions League, they will need to assess their options though.
Cameroon international Matip has injury problems of his own, whilst Gomez is still relatively raw when it comes to playing at the elite level.
Upamecano is a youngster but he has showcased a real maturity in his defending and is one of Leipzig’s star men.
TBR View – Klopp must pull out the stops for Bundesliga star
The 21-year-old warrior is a must for Liverpool and they should do whatever it takes to sign him in January.
They simply can’t afford to wait until the summer when a plethora of clubs are likely to be more inclined to sign the Leipzig man.
Liverpool have tried to be shrewd spenders in the market since Klopp’s arrival and in large his strategy has been spot on.
Upamecano has the potential to be the best of the lot and he needs to beg his board to land the enforcer during the mid-season window.
