Report: Liverpool want 10-cap Manchester City player

Liverpool are at the front of the queue of clubs keen on signing Gavin Bazunu, but the Sunday Mirror (5/12; page 65) reports that Manchester City want to hand the goalkeeper a new contract.

Bazunu is yet to make his debut for the Cityzens. However, the 19-year-old is impressing out on loan with Portsmouth.

He has also established himself as Stephen Kenny’s number one for Republic of Ireland. The teenager only made his senior debut earlier this year. But he looks to be ahead of Caoimhin Kelleher in the pecking order.

And perhaps he could soon be rivalling Kelleher at Anfield. The Sunday Mirror (5/12; page 65) reports that there are a raft of clubs keen on Bazunu, including Liverpool.

City hope to ensure that he goes nowhere however. The report claims that Pep Guardiola’s men want to hand him a new contract to see off the interest.

Would Liverpool signing Bazunu bring end to Kelleher’s Anfield career?

Kelleher has proved that he is a very talented goalkeeper. The 23-year-old kept a clean sheet on his only Premier League start this season. And he has established himself as Alisson’s backup in recent times.

Given his age however, he would be forgiven for having a desire to get out and play regularly. And with that, Liverpool’s interest in Bazunu perhaps hints that the Reds may be planning for Kelleher to move on.

Of course, it must not be forgotten that City have no intention of letting Bazunu leave. But it may be a sign that Liverpool have several targets on their radar in case Kelleher is looking for a new challenge.
