Italian outlet CalcioMercato have claimed that Liverpool and Juventus will need to spend just £8.5million if they want to sign Toulouse teenager Mathieu Goncalves, after the youngster broke into the French side’s senior team this season.
Goncalves, 18, made his debut for Toulouse last season and has gone on to make another four appearances for the Ligue 1 side this time around. He can play on the left side of the defence, and at centre-back.
Liverpool have options in both positions. Andy Robertson remains first-choice left-back, while Joe Gomez and James Milner can provide cover on the left side of defence. In the middle of the defence, Liverpool have options, too.
Indeed, Dejan Lovren remained at the club in the summer – while Virgil van Dijk, Gomez and Joel Matip are also options. Goncalves, though, has the talent to breakthrough into the Liverpool side in the future.
TBR’s view – Goncalves is a bargain at £8.5m
If Liverpool are able to beat Juventus in pursuit of Goncalves and lure him to Anfield for £8.5million would be an enormous bargain, as they would be signing a player with the quality expected of a player much elder than the Frenchman.
Liverpool have already signed Takumi Minamino for £7.25million ahead of the January window, as Michael Edwards continues to be praised for his transfer business. Signing Goncalves for less than eight figures would only further that praise.
