Liverpool and Manchester United face missing out on Raphael Varane thanks to Real Madrid parting ways with Sergio Ramos.

Ramos left Madrid this week after 16 years at the Bernabeu. His spell their was trophy-laden, with five Champions Leagues and five La Liga titles firmly under his belt.

His defensive partner Varane had also been expected to leave the club this summer. As reported on TBR prior, the Frenchman is being courted by the likes of United and Liverpool.

However, a report from The Times says that, in the wake of Ramos leaving, that Madrid have now opened talks with Varane about a new deal.

The French World Cup winner has just 12 months left on his current deal in Madrid. It was initially thought that the club would cash-in on him. But with Carlo Ancelotti now back, and Ramos gone, Los Blancos seem to have had a change of heart.

Whether Varane decides to stay or not is another question. Clearly, he’d be the main man now with Ramos gone. But at 28, he could fancy another challenge, leaving Madrid with a serious hole to fill at the back.

Liverpool to miss out on Varane? It’s not the end of the world if they do

It would have been more of a nightmare a few months back, this. But since then, the Reds have confirmed the signing of Ibrahima Konate, while Virgil van Dijk is also coming back to fitness.

Signing Varane on top of having those two, as well as Joe Gomes, Joel Matip, and Nat Phillips, could have left the club top heavy.

For Varane, he now faces a big decision. A move to Old Trafford is still likely to appeal. But staying in Madrid, under Ancelotti, also has value.

Either way, it seems less likely than ever that we’ll see Varane in the Premier League.
