Report: Liverpool to make third largest bid in club history for one of Europe's biggest talents
Liverpool are set to make a £60 million offer for Nicolo Barella, according to a report in Tutto Mercato Web.
Big bid incoming
They say that Liverpool and Manchester United are both keen on the Euro 2020 winner, but it is the Reds who are chasing him ‘above all’.
Liverpool are thought to be on the hunt for a midfield replacement for Georginio Wijnaldum, who left on a free transfer.
If they were to move for Barella at that sort of price it would be a significant show of faith in the Italian.
Liverpool have only ever made two more expensive purchases in the club’s history, with Virgil van Dijk and Alisson joining for bigger fees.
Barella’s quality is undoubted though and a bid of that amount would surely have to be considered by Inter Milan, who aren’t in the best financial situation.
Can Liverpool afford the fee?
There may be some scepticism over whether Liverpool can afford such a fee themselves, considering they haven’t made any significant sales yet.
But the Italian press have seemed convinced of Liverpool’s interest in Barella for some time now.
If Barella was to make the move to Anfield he would inject further creativity to their ranks, with his performances over the past year highly eye catching.
Indeed, Jurgen Klinsmann told the BBC that he now sees Barella as ‘one of the biggest talents in Europe’ in quotes which will excite Liverpool supporters, given the latest reports.
