Liverpool have been dealt a huge blow in their pursuit of Real Madrid defender, Raphael Varane, with Marca now claiming he is in talks over a new deal.

In what seems to be one of the most fast paced transfer rumours of the year so far, Marca’s report comes just a day after Spanish outlet AS claimed Varane was seeking a new challenge.

That, of course, would have perked the ears up of Jurgen Klopp and co. However, Marca’s report today is a big blow, with the Spanish outlet well known for being reliable in terms of Madrid news.

It is claimed the club and Varane have opened talks over a new deal and that things are progressing nicely. In fact, it states Madrid expect a deal to agreed soon with minimal fuss.

Liverpool, then, could have to look elsewhere.  A new deal for Varane would surely end any speculation around his future in Spain.

TBR View: Liverpool were always going to find landing Varane tough

While signing Varane would have been dreamland for the Reds, they were always going to find it hard.

Madrid wanted big money – £43m apparently –  anyway if they were to sell and as so often happens, it looks like they’re now swining the pendulum back in their favour with a bumper new offer for Varane.

Liverpool are probably best moving on from this one now. The thought of Varane and Van Dijk was a brilliant one but Madrid seem to be getting their man tied down.
