Report: Liverpool staff taken aback by one display from Fraser Forster

Some Liverpool backroom staff were actually taken aback by the improvement Fraser Forster had made when the now Tottenham goalkeeper faced the Reds in January 2021, according to a report from The Athletic.

Forster was a surprise signing for Spurs in the summer. He arrived off the back of a mixed spell with Southampton.

At his best, Forster showed that he was one of the top goalkeepers in the country. But his confidence then seemed to take a real hit. And he was not the same player until after a successful loan spell with Celtic.

Even then, he had to fight his way back to the number one spot at St Mary’s. But he did manage to make 19 appearances in the Premier League last season.

And it seems that his return to form caught some off-guard.

Southampton’s win over Liverpool in January last year will probably be best remembered for Ralph Hasenhuttl’s emotional celebration after final whistle. But it seems that Forster’s performance left an impression on the visiting bench.

The Athletic reports that some Liverpool staff were taken aback by his improvement. They were particularly impressed by his ability to play out under pressure.

Of course, Tottenham probably did not sign Forster to be a long-term successor to Hugo Lloris. The England international will be 35 by the end of the season.

It was a move that made sense for all parties. Tottenham have signed a very decent understudy for Lloris this season. And he did not cost them anything in terms of a transfer fee.

Spurs fans would be very happy if Lloris – in his current form – played every single game this season. But that is unlikely to be possible with Tottenham battling on several fronts.

Lloris would leave huge gloves to fill if he is indeed rested at some stage. But, judging by the latest report, perhaps it should not be a surprise if Forster does step up whenever called upon.
