German outlet Fussballeck have claimed that Liverpool and Chelsea are rivalling Barcelona in pursuit of Freiburg attacker and Germany international Luca Waldschmidt ahead of the summer window.

Waldschmidt, 24, has been a crucial part of an excellent Freiburg side that currently sit far beyond expectation in this season’s topsy-turvy Bundesliga campaign. They are eighth, and well in contention to qualify for European football.

Three-time Germany international Waldschmidt only joined Freiburg in 2018 but has since had an excellent impact – netting 15 goals and creating six more in 50 appearances. This season, he has had a hand in eight goals during 17 Bundesliga matches.

Injuries have hampered his progress, as has the global health crisis. The report states Liverpool, Chelsea and Barcelona all have him on their shortlist, given he boasts a release clause of just £20.7million. RB Leipzig are also keen, to replace Timo Werner.

TBR’s view – Waldschmidt would be a very good signing

The German has that aura of a player that can create things out of nothing. Very both-footed, able to play on either flank and as a number nine, and has both goals and assists in his locker – a fee of just £20.7million is very cheap.

But do Liverpool sign him? Their long-standing interest in Werner could remain, and Leipzig could look to replace the goal machine with Waldschmidt – therefore handing Liverpool a boost. But recent reports suggest Liverpool are no longer keen.

Nevertheless, Waldschmidt would be a very good signing and like Divock Origi, would provide cover for any of Sadio Mane, Mo Salah and Roberto Firmino.
