Report: Liverpool prepared to listen to offers for Joel Matip and Ben Davies
Liverpool could sell Joel Matip this summer, as well as being open to offers for both Ben Davies and Nat Phillips, according to reports.
ESPN make the claim. Their report suggests that Matip is among the defensive players who Klopp could look to move on this summer.
The Reds are looking to recoup some money after bringing in Ibrahima Konate. Not only that, but Konate’s signing, in addition to the returns of Joe Gomez and Virgil van Dijk, pushes the likes of Matip down the pecking order.
The club also have Rhys Williams breaking through the ranks. The young defender impressed in the final weeks of the season alongside Nat Phillips.
Indeed, Phillips is also a player who could be sold. Burnley are said to be keen on the no-nonsense defender.
The sale of Matip would be quite a surprise, though. Despite his injuries last season, the defender has been a mainstay of the side in recent years. In fact, Klopp loves him as well. The German boss lauded Matip back in late 2020.
“Joel, since he was with us, he is incredible. He was incredible before, that’s why we signed him. He is an incredible football player, it’s unbelievable how good he is,” Klopp said.
“Yes, he was unlucky with injuries. Before he arrived here he had no injuries, played for Schalke pretty much through four, five or six years. If he is in the best moment of his career, I don’t know, but I was really happy with the moment of his career he was in for the last four years. Super player.”
Matip leaving Liverpool risky for Klopp, depending on who else goes
Obviously, last season was a bit of a one off in terms of the big injuries. But Klopp won’t want to end up in a similar situation again this year.
Clearly, one or two defenders might have to go. The Reds have seven central defenders at the moment, and that’s without including Fabinho.
But letting Matip go could be the riskiest of the lot. The 29-year-old is a seasoned pro and is more than reliable when called upon. If he does go, then whoever lands him will be getting a quality defender in the ranks.
