Report: Liverpool one of five clubs interested in signing David Alaba for free

Liverpool are one of five clubs interested in securing the services of David Alaba during the summer, according to The Guardian.

The Bayern Munich player is out of contract at the end of the season and will be available on a free transfer.

Liverpool aren’t believed to be leading the chase, however, with La Liga giants Real Madrid on pole position for his signature.

The 28-year-old is keen to leave the Bundesliga outfit to end a 12-year association with the Bavarian giants.

It is thought that Los Blancos have already offered the defender a long-term contract but there are other interested parties.

Liverpool would welcome the chance to sign another defender.

Both Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez are long-term casualties and there is no suggestion right now when they will return.

Joel Matip has also proved injury-prone, whilst Nat Phillips and Rhys Williams are both extremely raw.

Alaba has proven himself as a legend at Bayern, helping the club to several titles.

The man with 73 caps for Austria has won nine league titles and also helped Bayern to the Champions League twice.

He has played 405 times for the club, scoring 32 goals and registering 49 assists.

Alaba largely plays at centre-back but boasts the versatility to operate at left-back and in a holding midfield role.

The Bayern star fits the profile of an Anfield signing down to the ground and Jurgen Klopp would be wise to pounce.

Alaba is at the sort of age where he still has plenty of years left, whilst Liverpool wouldn’t have to break the bank for him.

He can play in a number of positions, works tirelessly for his team and leads by example.

The Reds managed to get Thiago from Bayern for £20 million but this deal would arguably be better.

Alaba earns £165,000-a-week in Germany and it will take a decent contract to lure him to Anfield.

That shouldn’t deter Liverpool, however, and Alaba could prove one of their best pieces of business in recent memory.
