Report: Liverpool now confident they're going to beat West Ham and sign 'elite' defender this summer

West Ham were interested but now it is Liverpool close to signing Calvin Ramsay from Aberdeen this summer, according to 90Min.

Liverpool are apparently closing in on a deal for the young defender, who would cost in the region of £6 million when the window opens.

That could signal the departure of Neco Williams, who spent the second half of the season on loan at Fulham as they were promoted to the Premier League.

Aberdeen chairman Dave Cormack has claimed that Ramsay is amongst the ‘elite‘ when it comes to young right-backs in Europe, and he looks to have a huge future ahead of him.

Liverpool close to signing Calvin Ramsay

Their report reads: “Premier League quartet Leeds, West Ham, Burnley and Crystal Palace have been tracking Ramsay, who Aberdeen have placed a £6m price tag on, and it’s expected that he will move on from Pittodrie this summer.

However, it’s title chasing Liverpool who are leading the race to sign Ramsay, 90min has learned, and sources close to the Reds now believe a deal is close.

Liverpool are confident of winning the race for Aberdeen’s teenage full-back Ramsay, which could lead to an Anfield exit for Neco Williams, 90min understands.

Liverpool are getting very good at buying up the best young talent to build for the next generation which should stretch beyond Jurgen Klopp’s reign at the club, even allowing for his new contract extension.

Ramsay would have been a good signing for West Ham, although Ben Johnson is another promising young full-back coming through who can play on both sides.

This does look like a good opportunity to sign someone who could follow in the footsteps of Andy Robertson and Kieran Tierney for an affordable price.

Of course, it is hard for any full-back to come in and dislodge Robertson or Trent Alexander-Arnold, but they will be great role models for Ramsay to learn from if he does make the move to Anfield.
