Sky Germany have claimed that Liverpool are interested in signing Borussia Monchengladbach star Denis Zakaria but face plenty of competition from around Europe, including bitter rivals Manchester United.

Zakaria, 23, has been in excellent form for Gladbach this season. Indeed, the 28-time Switzerland international has clocked up 31 appearances in all competitions for the Bundesliga side this season – scoring two goals and even creating two.

The former Young Boys star is able to play in central midfield, or at the heart of the defence. Indeed, Zakaria’s versatility makes him an excellent option for some of Europe’s biggest clubs with Liverpool keen.

However, they are not alone in their pursuit of Zakaria. Klopp’s former side Borussia Dortmund and Atletico Madrid – who knocked Liverpool out of the Champions League – are keen. Manchester United have also been linked by the report.

German newspaper BILD previously reported that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side were keen back in October.

TBR’s view – Would Zakaria be a good signing?

Liverpool are likely to lose Dejan Lovren in the summer with the Croatian ace being linked with a number of sides ahead of the summer window. Having Zakaria as cover at centre-back, then, would boost Jurgen Klopp’s side.

Crucially, though, Zakaria would not only act as cover at centre-back. Both Jordan Henderson and Fabinho have spent time in the treatment room this season, and added cover at the base of the Liverpool midfield would be ideal.

Zakaria can do that. Bild claim he is worth £45million, and that would be good business for Liverpool.
