Report: Liverpool increase interest in out-of-favour Juventus defender

Chris Linnell

According to ESPN, Liverpool are chasing Juventus defender Angelo Ogbonna, after sending scouts to yesterday evening’s Champions League final. Sources claim the Reds sent representatives to witness the European spectacle, despite the 27-year-old failing to make an appearance from the bench.

The 27-year-old has been in and out of Massimiliano Allegri’s Juventus side this season, having made 25 appearances in Serie A, playing the full game 17 times. Nonetheless, the Italian international will have been disappointed not to start in the injured Giorgio Chiellini’s place, as the club chased a historic season treble.

Unable to disrupt the defensive hegemony of Chiellini and Leonardo Bonucci in Turin, it is expected that Ogbonna will seek a new challenge elsewhere. However, with three years to run on his contract, it is unlikely that Juventus will allow him to leave for anything under his market value – currently £8.8 million, according to TransferMrket.

Brendan Rodgers is keen to reinforce his side defensively as he prepares for a decisive campaign at the helm of the Anfield outfit. Reports suggests that doubts surrounding the long-term future of Martin Skrtel, after he branded the club’s offer of a new deal “unacceptable,”, could see the Northern Irishman step up his interest in Ogbonna.

The Italian’s experience would undoubtedly prove invaluable as Rodgers looks to reinforce a back-line that leaked a worrying 48 goals this season.

Would Juventus defender Angelo Ogbonna prove a valuable signing for Liverpool?
