Liverpool have held talks with Stoke City regarding a potential move for Jack Butland, according to a report from the Sunday Mirror (11/10; page 76).

The Reds are looking to strengthen their goalkeeper ranks before the transfer window closes fully on Friday. Jurgen Klopp’s men conceded seven in their final game before the international break.

The shock defeat at Villa Park has led to questions about Adrian’s ability to step in in Alisson’s absence. The Brazilian is reportedly set to be out for six weeks due to injury.

And that has prompted Liverpool to look at Butland. According to the Sunday Mirror (11/10; page 76), talks between the two clubs are underway.

It is noted that Butland is into the final year of his contract with the Potters. He is also said to be one of their highest-earners.

Interestingly, the Sunday Mirror adds that Butland could potentially make his debut in the Merseyside derby. So it would appear that the 27-year-old is not going to get any time to settle in at Anfield should he complete a move.

TBR View: Butland could be an inspired addition with expectations likely to be low

Liverpool do not have many places to turn if they want a new goalkeeper right now. So you could understand why Butland is reportedly on their radar.

He should not cost a huge amount. Unfortunately, he is out of favour at Stoke. And it would appear that they would appreciate the chance to move him on due to his wages.

He had previously shown that he had enormous potential. Butland is an England international. And, as the Mirror notes, he was talked about as a potential £30 million-rated stopper when Stoke were relegated and clubs were circling.

Expectations will be low for the goalkeeper. But if Klopp can restore his confidence, it could prove to be an excellent piece of business as the Reds look for move cover for Alisson.
