Liverpool have not offered fresh terms to Virgil van Dijk and do not have plans to.

That’s the counter-claim made by The Liverpool Echo, after The Mirror reported on Saturday that the Dutch colossus had agreed an extension at Anfield.

The Mirror had said that van Dijk had agreed a ‘massive’ new contract worth nearly £200,000-a-week to tie him to the club until 2025.

But The Echo dispute that and claim the club have no imminent plans to talk to van Dijk about a new deal, and that the player himself has been left ‘bemused’ by the reports.

Currently, van Dijk is only 20 months into the contract he signed when he made his £75 million move from Southampton (which runs till 2023).

TBR’s view

Although Liverpool fans would love for van Dijk to sign an improved contract, there is surely no rush.

The player seems very content with life on Merseyside, and is arguably the first name on the Liverpool teamsheet.

He has transformed the team’s defence and turned the Reds into a force to be reckoned with.

He does not come across as someone who would started demanding fresh terms and will surely be sticking around for years to come, which is all that matters to the Liverpool faithful.
