Liverpool are keen to get ahead of Real Madrid in the chase to sign Monaco and France midfielder Aurélien Tchouameni.
A report by French outlet Foot Mercato claims that the midfielder had seemed destined to join Real, who face Manchester City in the Champions League semi-finals tonight.
But the Reds are keen to steal a march in the race and have made contact with the player’s entourage ahead of the summer transfer window.
Jurgen Klopp is apparently planning for a midfield future without James Milner and Jordan Henderson and sees the Frenchman as the perfect replacement.

Madrid are of course focusing on trying to sign another young Frenchman, in the shape of Kylian Mbappe, who is out of contract this summer.
That might take the majority of their focus and transfer budget, allowing Liverpool to steal a march in the chase for Tchouameni.
It is tough to see too many weaknesses in this Liverpool squad, who are still in with a chance of winning every trophy available to them this season.
Midfield has always been a talking point in terms of a natural creator in there, and Tchouameni is not that either. He is a dominant, commanding, tackling midfielder.

Liverpool and Tchouameni seem a perfect fit
Manchester United have been linked with the midfielder in the past and they need a replacement for Paul Pogba, whose contract expires in the summer.
Pogba has hailed his international teammate as ‘extraordinary’ and there is little doubt he has a huge future ahead of him.
As Pogba himself can testify, not many players have gone to United in the post-Ferguson era at Old Trafford and improved.
On the other hand, Jurgen Klopp has brought so many of his players to new heights and from a development perspective, Tchouameni would be better served at Anfield, which seems an ideal fit.
