Report: Liverpool have eyed Andrey Santos; but Chelsea are favourites

Liverpool have shown interest in Brazilian midfielder Andrey Santos, but The Times reports that it is Chelsea who are favourites to sign the 18-year-old.

Santos is wanted by a host of European heavyweights after impressing with Vasco da Gama. He has scored eight goals in 37 appearances in all competitions for the club.

And he may indeed be Premier League-bound. However, the Reds may be amongst those set for disappointment as it is claimed by The Times that Chelsea have emerged as favourites to secure his signature.

Chelsea have looked to bolster their squad with a number of incredibly talented young players since the club came under new ownership. And it seems that they hope to make Santos the latest to come through the door at Stamford Bridge.

The Evening Standard recently suggested that Santos could cost about £12 million. So clearly – given the amount of interest in him – that could prove to be a real bargain.

It may be a disappointment for the Reds to miss out. Obviously, they already have a number of Brazilian players in their squad in the likes of Alisson, Fabinho and Roberto Firmino.

So they may have been hopeful of convincing Santos to join them.

Liverpool certainly need to overhaul their midfielder in the coming windows. The likes of Thiago, James Milner and Jordan Henderson are all 31 or older. And players such as Naby Keita and Arthur have struggled to make an impact.

So signing someone like Santos could have been a big boost for Liverpool.
